Every year on May 12th, International Nurses’ Day is observed. This day also celebrates the contribution made by nurses to society around the world. On this day, the International Council of Nurses produces an International Nurses kit to educate and assist health workers globally with a different theme every year. This year’s theme is “Nurses a voice to lead: Invest in Nursing and respect rights to secure Global Health.”
Considering the importance of this day, lamp lighting was a ceremonial occasion to initiate the nursing students into their future professional life. This was followed by the students taking a pledge to uphold the spirit of dedicated service.

On the day, 157 students from the 7th batch B.Sc and 5th batch GNM nursing students took their vows to tend to the sick and ailing, irrespective of caste, creed, and religious community. The nursing students were also guided to follow the code of ethics while attending to patients in their everyday practice. 101 students from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd batches of B.Sc Nursing and the 1st batch of M.Sc Nursing batch also graduated today.
Mrs. Anidita Mukherjee, Mayor of DMC, said, “Nurses play an essential role in society today by being advocates for health promotion, educating the public and patients on preventing injuries and illnesses, participating in rehabilitation, and providing care and support. Many regard Florence Nightingale as the modern nursing founder who rejected the societal expectations for middle-class women and pursued a nursing career. Her gritty determination and passion are characteristics that many midwives and nurses identify with today, especially with the demands faced due to COVID-19 and other medical issues seen in communities. ”
Dr. Jeyadeepa R, Principal, IQ City Institute of Nursing Sciences, said, “The tenfold vows taken by the students in this ceremony guide her to be determined to perform her duties properly by attaining qualities like courage, forgiveness, and forbearance by the grace of the supreme being who is the innermost self of beings.”
